Every day, kids within a Crew choose one of five jobs: Kit Carrier, Guide, Prayer Person, Navigator, or Thank You-er! Kids love having a special job every day, especially when those jobs get called on.
Each time kids hear the day’s Bible Point, they will grab their elbows like a hug and shout, “Jesus rescues!” ww Call on kids’ Crew roles. Repeating the Bible Point again and again will help children remember it and then apply it to their lives after VBS. Every activity at Shipwrecked VBS focuses on one simple, memorable daily Bible truth called the Bible Point. Once kids are familiar with the signal, you will automatically regain their attention when you use it. The first time kids come to your station, introduce and rehearse your attention-getting signal. You can use the Toucan Twister (available from Group Publishing or your Group VBS supplier) or another signal of your choice. Attention-getting signals let kids know when it’s time to stop what they’re doing and look at you. For example, if your VBS has 20 Crews, you’ll be working with 5 Crews (approximately 25 kids and 5 leaders) during each session. Plan on having one-quarter of the total number of Crews in each of your rotations. At Shipwrecked VBS, kids join mixed-age Crews- groups of up to five elementary-age kids and one adult or teenage leader. ww Determine the number of Crews you’ll have in each rotation. In the supply lists, items shown with an asterisk are available from Group Publishing or your Group VBS supplier. You may already have supplies from past summers with Group, too!) You might want to list supplies in your church bulletin and ask church members to donate or lend items such as foam slabs, black fabric, plastic greenery, and cardboard boxes. (Okay, we did have the Big Blue Sky Wall Hanging from past field tests. Almost all of the supplies we used are easy to find around the church, from church members, or from Group. Ww Work with the VBS Director to collect necessary supplies. It’s worth the minor setup time to hear “Awesome!” and “Wow!” when kids walk in! TidAl Tip It’s so important-and easy!-to create a new setting in the Bible Discovery room each day so kids can experience the Bible stories in fresh and exciting ways. Who knew you could do so much with greenery and “stones”? The ones we did use, we used again and again to create different settings. So setup is…well…easy! At our field test, we used few decorating supplies. Part of that experience comes when you create a unique setting each day. One big difference between Shipwrecked VBS and other VBS programs is that kids become part of the Bible story-with their hearts, minds, and emotions. Ideally, your room should be large and off by itself a little, with an unused room and hallway nearby-because you won’t be sitting still or staying put during Bible Discovery! ww Create a unique setting each day.
